  Items of General Interest

   Defining the term "Basis Point."

  • Today’s financial vocabulary often uses the term "basis point." A basis point explains a mathematical change between two numbers or measurements. For example, 100 basis pints = 1%, 200 basis points = 2%, etc. For smaller changes, for example, 1 basis point = .01%, 10 basis points = .1%. Here are some examples. In financial analysis, a stock dividend increasing from 2% to 2.5% means that the yield has increased by 50 basis points. If instead the yield increased from 2% to 3%, the change is an increase of 100 basis points.
